Mom of a sailing child

As a mother of a sailing child I can´t miss the change of hobby season in the spring. No guitar lessons anymore, but sailing, sailing, sailing.

In my life it means waking up early on the weekends, preparing picnic lunches for my son, driving a big car in all kinds of harbours - and belive me, my car is not the only big car in those places - and trying to find a shop opening early enough to buy sunscreen with the highest possible protection factor.

And instead of summer clothes, there are wetsuits, drysuits, neoprene shoes, sailing watches, lifejackets etc on the shopping list.

Because I don´t know so much about sailing, I try to make myself usefull by pulling the trolley and keeping my mouth shut. No comments on sailing, or much on anything, by me. It is not always so easy. It was somehow easier with my daughter than it is with my son. I am not a Tiger Mom, on the contrary, but unfortunately sports of all kind sometimes bring the dark sides of parents in daylight.

After the race there is usually a tired, sometimes also a dissapointed and angry child sailing into the harbour. That situation can be quite tense for both sides. Mom has also had a long day.

But anyway. Sailing is a great sport. It is often a lifelong love. At best it will also learn your child to respect nature, the environment and the unpredictable forces of the sea, as well as it can give him lifelong friendships, pleasure and at least a good tan.
