More
than thirty years ago I spent some time in the regions of Eastern
Mediterranean, summer in Turkey, winters in Israel. I felt like being
at home in those places and with the people there. I mean, you can
visit wonderful places, but it is the people that count most.
Maybe
I have to thank Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, that facebook guy and the
ones who invented Skype for finding some of those people again. It
also seems to me, that I am not the only one, who has been doing some
research in the world of social media, looking for old friends,
places we used to visit, music we used to listen, old photos etc.
One
thing we seem to have in common is, that there is also a kind of
longing back to “the old days” among us. To the warm days of
summer, night skies filled with stars, crickets having their eternal
concerts, to the days with a chance for love and lifelong
friendships. Maybe this is the time and age, when you wonder how life
would have been, if you had made different choices. Time to revisit
old places and renew old friendships. And time to be happy to be
back home again.
And
of course there are friends like the Veteran of the Tribal Wars. A
tall guy I first noticed at the airport when arriving to his country.
We still keep in touch every now and then. And after all these years,
I sometimes wonder what had happened, if I had made different
choices, if I had told the Veteran on the way to the airport: “Turn
the car! I am not leaving, I´ll stay here.”.
If
I had stayed, I might still be there or I may have left the following
week. I´ll never know. But
after all, it feels good to have contacts with those people you once
liked, loved, people with whom you laughed but also cried. Nostalgia?
Whatever. There will always be a place for them in my heart..
