Tarinaa tanssimisen tuskasta, kun tanssija kuuluu samaan ikäryhmään kuin Madonna.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometimes dancing is nothing but pure agony. You are feeling clumsy, slow and have absolutely no sense of rhythm. Your short term memory leaves a lot to be desired while practising a new set of movements. Everyone else seems to be doing allright. At the end you are just trying to survive through the class.
And then there are those days when different parts of your body are aching and preventing you from doing this and that. The amount of kinesiology tape you wrap around your feet, ankles and wrists could easily support a pharmacy for sometime. A professional dancer said once, that if you wake up one morning without any pains somewhere in your body, you are probably dead. Don´t know about that.
And then you think of quitting it all. It doesn´t seem to make any difference what kind of dance you choose, modern, classic, jazz , after the class you still feel like a fish out of water. Joy of dance – screw you.
But you won´t quit. You just have to accept your limitations and do your best.
In my case it means, that I am now more than 30 years older than when I first started dancing. There was also a break of almost twenty years before I found and could attend a dance class again. Age is not a limitation, but it certainly makes a difference, if you have been dancing for the last twenty years or you are just a beginner.
I am also a slow learner when it comes to dancing. I just have to take my time and repeat, repeat, repeat … It also means that the moments of success are quite rare: it just takes time to catch the moments, when you feel your soul dancing, not just your body.
Inspite of the difficulties and the moments of dissatisfaction I still think that one fine day I ´ll find the rhythm and the movement, that comes right out of my soul. I dream of the day, when I can really and honestly express something through dancing, to perform, not just struggle through the class. Until then - I go training, training, training as often and as much as I can.

Saanko luvan - Shall we dance
Footlight Spring Show took
place on Friday night at Alexander Theatre in Helsinki. Since I
was almost childishly disappointed of not being able to dance myself , I wasn´t really sure if I wanted to see the show at all. There I was
however.
Unfortunately the audience
was not allowed to take pictures during the performance. It is really stupid, but you can check this link http://www.tanssikeskusfootlight.fi/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=31&Itemid=50&lang=fi
According to my son ”my group” looked like “flight attendants of some budget airline”. Maybe so, but “my group” did well.
A girl
performing in a MTV -like showdance got my attention in the show . There were many talented dancers, but this girl was talented, expressive
and totally present on the stage. And I have to add, that I am not
actually a fan of that I-wanna-look-sexy -dance genre of MTV.
Dancing as a hobby is
very popular in Finland at the moment. People of all ages attend
dance classes. Senior teams in competitions like Performing
Arts Championship in show-, jazz- and contemporary dance, are not
unusual. While I was watching the show on Friday evening, I thought
about how important it is to teach not only the basic techniques
but also how to
find you own expression as a dancer, find the
essence of the movement. A skilled dancer is okay, but she/he could be even more than skilled. Dancing is
an everlasting love, so we better make the best out of it.

Footlightin kevätnäytös oli
perjantai-iltana Aleksanterin teatterissa. Koska olin lapsellisen pettynyt, kun en jalkaongelman vuoksi päässyt
itse tanssimaan, ajattelin etten mene koko näytökseen. Menin nyt
kuitenkin.
Sääli ettei näytöksestä voinut
ottaa kuvia. Nyt täytyy tyytyä linkkiin Footlightin sivuille http://www.tanssikeskusfootlight.fi/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=31&Itemid=50&lang=fi
Lapsi lähti mukaan näytökseen : ”Toi
sun ryhmäs näyttää ihan jonkun halpalentoyhtiön
lentoemmänniltä.”. Johtui varmaan punaisista kaulahuiveista. No joo, vapise Virgin Airlines,
Fly Footlight tulee. Kunnialla ”mun ryhmä” hoiti esityksen.
Muuten illan näytöksestä jäi
mieleen MTV -tyyppinen esitys. En ole mikään hillitön
musiikkivideo fani. Se mikä joskus näytti
mielenkiintoiselta, näyttää nyt vanhempana vain
pikkupornahtavalta, puolihuvittavalta vääntelyltä. Jäin
kuitenkin katsomaan nuorta naista, jolla teknisen osaamisen lisäksi
oli sekä läsnäoloa että karismaa näyttämöllä.
Tanssi on nyt in ja pop
kaiken ikäisten keskuudessa. Show-, jazz- ja nykytanssin mestaruuskisoissa,
Performing Arts Championship 2012, on myös seniorisarja. Hyvä niin. Työtuttava
veteli showtanssin senioriryhmässä Suomen mestariksi viime vuonna.
Eikä hänkään suoranainen teinityttö enää ole. Onnea Lauralle
Huh, kuulostanpas mahtipontiselta! Aika on rajallinen luonnonvara,
teetkin. Tanssi on usein läpi elämän kestävä rakkaussuhde. Parasta ottaa
siitä kaikki irti.
